A chunky knit cardigan with no buttons and no closure at all, which is rather the point of it: the front stays open and whatever is underneath stays visible. The shoulders drop well past the shoulder seam and the sleeves gather into deep ribbed cuffs, so the arm has room to move while the wrist stays neat. It sits at the hip and stops there, which keeps the proportion right over a short skirt.
The knit is heavy enough to hold its own shape rather than collapsing on the hanger, and the ribbed hem gives the bottom edge something to sit against so the front panels hang straight. It is warm without being a coat, which makes it the layer you keep on the back of a chair and pull on when the room cools down. Over a tee and a skirt it does the most work, and it goes over a shirt just as willingly.
